2014 #5 Prospect: Dariel Alvarez

Overall upside of Alvarez varies from scout to scout but most think he's going to end up a useful major league player. Most seem to think he'll end up a solid 4th outfielder, but with his excellent intangibles, ability to hit for average, and his plus defense and arm, he's got a chance to be a regular as well.

Melewski wrote that he thought Alverez was close to being ready to play at the MLB level, and when I mentioned that, several pointed out, that he didn't show too much with the bat, power-wise at AAA.

We really haven't received a lot of power out of RF for a while now. If he can play good defense and hit .280ish with 15 bombs, it would be fine.

Is any of that home ballpark related?

True, but 1 HR in 44 games at AAA is pretty weak.

Personally, I think he will be fine, but you know the doom and gloomers. ;)

I guess that would be me.

I think Alvarez comes to ST with a chance to make the O's roster but he is more likely to start the year at AAA. He will have to really beat out other players to make the O's roster.

I wonder if Markakis is signed what that means for Alvarez? Obviously it clears a path for him to pay LF if ever makes it to the majors but he could be used as trade bait too. I know he isn't a top prospect but maybe he could be a useful chip to add in for a bigger deal.

And I believe Melewski said the same thing, close to being ready, and depending on the roster situation with Davis and the rest of the question marks.

Why would you assume that Alvarez would jump over Lough and start, instead of to the bench as 4 OF?

I don't think his low OBP and low power make him an adequate regular. He's going to have to show significantly more power at AAA to get a shot at anything more than a utility player, imo.

Despite just one homer in AAA, Alvarez slugged .439 because he had 17 doubles in 44 games.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about his power. The bigger worry is whether his "swing at everything" propensity will cause his OBP to deteriorate further as he faces more sophisticated pitchers.

I was happy to read about Alvarez's attitude and being a "Buck kind of guy." That goes a long way.

And, I am five for five so far.
